Jacob Bussmann (He/Him)

One of my greatest joys in life is locking arms with others and helping them transform their pain, loneliness, and despair into peace, strength, and contentment. I understand from experience how hard it can be to ask for help. I have had multiple moments in my life when I reached out to a therapist, and my present self is thankful for it. It helped me heal areas of my life and myself that were hurting. It even inspired me to become the therapist that I am today.

I have been married to my best friend for 3 years, have a baby boy at home, and enjoy spending time with my family. A restful day to me sounds like making some coffee, going for a walk, and having a quiet day at the lake with family. I enjoy following local sports (Go Chiefs!) and playing sports with friends. Whether I am at home reading a good book, driving in traffic, or playing basketball, I do my best to grow into a better person every day and it is my hope that this interest rubs off on all that I meet.

Approach

I use an approach in therapy that heavily leans on experiential work. That is, the relationship that is built in the therapy room is an important tool in counseling. It is also paired with a person-centered approach that focuses on building a relationship that harbors trust, honor, and care for your story. The two approaches combine to allow the therapy room to be a safe place to explore, challenge, and find healing in previous woundings with a safe therapeutic relationship that holds compassion and care for you.

If you are interested in clinical terms, I mainly rely on Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) that directs attention to regulation of the nervous system, and allows our bodily sensations and emotions to tell our stories of hurt and pain. With an Attachment-Focused lens attached, the therapeutic relationship aims at building confidence in new relational skills that were once damaged due to human disconnect and violation.

I also lean on modalities such as Polyvagal Theory, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Experiential Therapy, and Emotion Focused Therapy.
